Does anybody know of a good way to syncronise an iCloud folder with a Dropbox folder?

Blot connects (so far) only to Dropbox as data source. Some writing tools I work with only connect to iCloud. If I want to continue working with both, I would need a sync solution between an iCloud folder and a Dropbox folder. Does anybody know of some online services doing this?

We're working on adding support for iCloud and the new client should be released in the next month or so.

In the meantime, Blot also supports Google Drive and Git as methods to sync your folder.

What devices are you using where the app only connects to iCloud?

In iOS and iPadOS, if you install the Dropbox client you can add Dropbox as a location in Files. Then apps can access Dropbox via that location.

Well, this does not answer my question, but the outlook that iCloud support is only roughly a month away might make the question irrelevant...

As far as I know there is no robust way to sync between iCloud and Dropbox

Just an FYI - I use iCloud for the same reason (Obsidian support), and I use Sync Folders pro to keep the iCloud folders sync'd with folders on the Mac's local drive. From there, I use Blot's git connection. I haven't experienced any problems with this set up. I am looking forward to the native iCloud support, although I worry about iOS strict sandboxing.

I'm getting ready to transfer my Wordpress blog to Blot. I would really like to use iCloud, for many reasons, but, for now, I'm using Google Drive. I haven't tried it yet, but there is a way to sync the two. If you have a Mac running when you edit files for Blot, you can use the Hazel app to copy each new or changed file from your iCloud folder to Google Drive or Dropbox. Even if you edit files on an iPhone or iPad, as long as the Mac is running, it will sync the files, once they arrive from the iCloud server.

You'd have to create rules for each folder in your main Blot folder.

Really good news about iCloud support! Thanks David. I dropped my Dropbox down to the basic level and can't wait to use the new sync method. Just a question. I like writing now from my iPhone as well as my MacBook. I just use IAWriter and Dropbox on both devices and it works very well. Will the new sync method support iOS devices as well as Mac?

The method will create a shared folder in your iCloud Drive, so any tool that is able to read/write to a specific shared folder in your iCloud Drive will work, either on iOS or MacOS.

Hi, David! What is the current thoughts on timing for the iCloud Drive support?

From the Dec 21, 2023 newsletter:

I have decided to postpone the iCloud client until Apple releases a web API for iCloud. Since there is no iCloud Drive web API, the workaround I had initially planned involved running a Mac, connected to the internet and powered 24/7, signed into Blot’s iCloud account. I’d use Apple Script to automate the creation of blog folders within iCloud Drive on the Mac server and then automate the sharing of those folders with your iCloud email addresses. The Mac server would then watch the shared folders for changes and sync them to Blot.

After thorough experimentation, the workaround I was planning to use is too unreliable – perhaps this seems obvious based on the description of the proposed system in the previous paragraph. I tried to make this work but did not succeed.

You can disregard my message to be informed when the iCloud client launches (saw that thread before I saw this one). I do wonder, did the release of the new Apple OS versions yield any change in the iCloud Drive APIs that would change your outlook on iCloud as an option?
